Source of inspiration ….. Genesis of a concept

C MARC, a manifestation of the blessing of the Creator Srimat Narendra Nath Brahmachary, the Guru of Professor Chitta Mitra. The Creator wanted Professor Mitra, Mrs Annapurna Mitra and son to develop an organization which would be conceptually innovative and professionally unique in character. Consequently, in 1977, Smt. Annapurna Mitra (a subject teacher in a leading girls collegiate school at Calcutta), Professor Chitta Mitra (then a Professor of Marketing at IIM Calcutta) and Mr Chinmay Mitra (a student, pursuing B.Sc at Calcutta University) were instrumental to accomplish the divine grace. Mrs Annapurna Mitra launched her sole proprietary organization, MARC, for the fulfilment of the aspiration of their Spiritual Master, an incredible concept of collecting and studying the prescription of medical practitioners in India.

In 1980, the proprietary firm MARC was converted to C MARC (India) Private Limited. Mr. Bhupatinath Mitra was appointed as the Chairman, Mrs. Annapurna Mitra became the Managing Director and Mr. Chinmay Mitra was appointed as an Executive.

In 1982, Professor Chitta Mitra, who was rendering part-time consultancy services (with the formal approval of the IIMC Board of Governors) to the organization, joined C MARC as a full-time Managing Director and Mrs. Annapurna Mitra became the Joint Managing Director.

To create any establishment one requires financial assistance. It was Mr. Tarun Gupta, the then Managing Director of Glaxo India, who provided all necessary financial support from Glaxo as an exclusive user of MARC and subsequently C MARC : Continuous Prescription Research (C MARC : CPR) Services.

In 1983, when Mr. Tarun Gupta was transferred from Glaxo India to Mexico, his successor suspended subscribing to C MARC : CPR services in order to evaluate the real contribution of C MARC : CPR. This decision of Glaxo was taken as a creative challenge. C MARC : CPR syndicated service was launched, potential users approached and gradually users started viewing promise inherent in the service offered by C MARC and found C MARC : CPR to be a unique service. Subsequently, Glaxo team realized the utility of C MARC : CPR services and revived the relationship with C MARC.

Mr. S M Kanwar of Glaxo Marketing Division personally flew to Calcutta and met Professor Chitta Mitra and discussed future plans. Mr S M Kanwar was of immense help to C MARC to make it a syndicated service provider to healthcare industry.
